How much time do you have?

A few hours

A stroll through town

If you are passing through Nisporeni and only have a few hours, an easy 1.3 km walk through the town centre is the ideal way to discover its charm. The route is not demanding at all, adds up to just 15–20 minutes of actual walking and starts right from the car park next to the Windmill, a historic landmark and the perfect place to leave your car and begin exploring.

As you walk on towards the heart of the town, the route becomes a real open-air gallery: the streets are brightened by four colourful murals, interspersed with eight monuments and commemorative busts that keep the community’s memory alive. The walk includes two cultural stops not to be missed: the historic building of the Casa Națională, a symbol of community life, and the Museum of Ethnography, where collections of traditional objects and folk costumes recreate the authentic spirit of the Codri region. The whole experience takes about an hour and a half, stops and photos included, offering a complete and relaxing insight into the identity of Nisporeni.

    One day

Between the town’s streets and the quiet of the hills

A whole day in Nisporeni gives you the perfect balance between discovering the town and the beauty of the surrounding hills. The route naturally begins with an easy 1.3 km walk through the town centre, which starts at the Windmill and takes you past the murals, the commemorative monuments, the Casa Națională and the authentic collections of the Museum of Ethnography.

Then you can take a well-deserved break at a place in town for lunch, a good coffee and a few moments of rest. The second part of the day continues with an invigorating walk up the steps to the imposing Cross of the Salvation of the Romanian Nation, a monument that watches over the whole area. Weather permitting, the itinerary is worth extending to the panoramic point on Mârzoaia Hill; it is the locals’ favourite spot for taking in the full view over Nisporeni and catching a spectacular sunset above the valleys.

    A weekend

    Nisporeni and its surroundings

If you choose to extend your getaway with an overnight stay, the Nisporeni region will reveal even more of its authentic charm. Start with a dose of peace and history by exploring Vărzărești Monastery, one of the oldest in the region, and Hâncu Monastery, a true spiritual oasis hidden in the heart of the Codri. For lovers of hiking and landscapes, a climb up Bălănești Hill — the highest point in the Republic of Moldova (430 m) — offers the most spectacular views over the wooded hills.

Besides nature and spirituality, the area is a keeper of traditions and crafts. Round off your route by admiring the picturesque wooden churches in the neighbouring villages, true heritage monuments. And for a truly memorable experience, by appointment, you can visit local producers: join a beekeeping workshop to taste pure honey straight from the source, or discover the skill of a traditional pottery workshop.

    Getting here

Nisporeni lies in the central part of the Republic of Moldova, on the edge of the Codri. You can get here by car or by public transport from Chișinău.

    On the trail

    • Good walking shoes — most trails climb the hills and can be slippery after rain.
    • Water and something to eat: there are no shops on the long trails.
    • In winter and after heavy rain, some stretches of country road become hard to travel.

    Visits and workshops

Beekeeping and candle-making workshops and visits to producers are arranged on request. Let them know in advance so your hosts can welcome you.

    At the monasteries

Wear clothing suitable for places of worship and keep the service times in mind, especially on feast days.
